Have you heard of something called a lie detection polygraph? They are torturing all of humanity and they have a special machine that some people use to attempt to determine if what you say is truth or not! Without further ado, let me share how it works!
During a polygraph test, the machine has means by which it measures these things, like your heart rate, breathing and levels of sweat. This is referred to as physiological responses and they can be altered when you are stressed or anxious like telling a lie. The rationale is that if these changes are measured then the polygraph can detect whether a person is telling the truth.
Mifer believes that some people think the results of polygraph tests are so accurate that you can just read them and then tell whether or not a person is lying. And while that seems like common sense, it turns out it may not be so straightforward. The polygraph, although helpful, is not foolproof. People can also attempt to manipulate their physiological responses or environment to subvert the results of a polygraph.
Polygraph tests are not always 100% accurate, according to studies. In fact, some experts say that they may be fooled as much as 25% of the time! So, there is always at last some possibility that someone who is telling the truth could fail a test or that an individual who is lying would not be detected.
Polygraph Tests Have A Lot Of Myths And Misconceptions Others think of them as a magic talisman that can be used to detect lies unerringly. To some, they are perfectly reliable and a quick way to create complex queries. For others, they are entirely too untrustworthy and shouldn't be used at all. I would say it falls somewhere between.
We know that lie detection polygraph tests are an imperfect tool, but they are one with which we work. But we always need to look at everything else that is out there, the other evidence and all information from a polygraph itself.
Polygraph tests are often used by law enforcement during the course of their investigations. They could, for example, request that someone who is suspected of committing a crime to sit an exam in order to help them collect more intelligence. For some jobs such as lie detection polygraph or security agencies may ask you to take a polygraph for your background check.
